On November 9, the President of Georgia met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Anastasiades. Two Presidents discussed full spectrum of bilateral cooperation including political, economic and cultural spheres and explored the prospects for their further enhancement.
The parties emphasized importance of Cyprus’ support to, and sharing experience with Georgia on its path towards the European integration.
President Zourabichvili provided her counterpart with the detailed information about the grave humanitarian situation in Georgia’s occupied territories, which has been further deteriorated by the Covid 19 pandemics. The President underlined that kidnappings, so called borderization and the fight against Georgian language continue.
The parties also discussed possibility of jointly celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Republic of Cyprus.
On the same day, the President of Georgia had a meeting with the President of the House of Representatives of the republic of Cyprus, Mrs. Annita Demetriou and congratulated her on the election to this high position. The parties stressed the importance of parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. Ms. Demetriou confirmed the support of the Republic of Cyprus for Georgia's European integration and expresed her readiness to share the experience in this regard.
During the visit, the President of Georgia met with the Archbishop of Cyprus, his beatitude Chrysostomos II and on behalf of the people of Georgia, its diaspora in the Republic of Cyprus and the Georgian Patriarchate expressed deep gratitude for granting the land for the construction of the Georgian monastery in the Paphos region of Cyprus.
After completion of the official part of the visit, President of Georgia had a meeting with representatives of the Georgian diaspora in Cyprus and visited archeological site of the medieval Georgian Monastery in the village of Ghalia.
